You’ve heard it a thousand times: I’m allergic to peanuts, I’m allergic to pollen, allergic to strawberries, soy, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. But you might be surprised, no, you will be surprised by some of the things people can be allergic to. But before we jump into those, let’s make sure we’re talking about the same thing, allergies. The dictionary states that an allergy is: “an abnormal reaction of the body to a previously encountered allergen introduced by inhalation, ingestion, injection, or skin contact, often manifested by itchy eyes, runny nose, wheezing, skin rash, or diarrhea.” That does not sound like fun. Fortunately, most allergies are not life-threatening and can be easily avoidable. Allergies affect almost thirty percent of all adults in America and up to forty percent of children. That’s a lot of people.
We started this article with a quick and short list of common allergies. But here are some allergies that will make you shake your head and be happy you don’t have.
1. Aquagenic Urticaria, or allergic to water
Imagine being allergic to water. It’s a rare allergy, but a real allergy. It causes hives and itching which fortunately goes away in about half an hour. Antihistamines can help with the symptoms. But still, it makes taking a shower miserable, and you can be sure few people with Aquagenic Urticaria is SCUBA diving or surfing as a hobby.
2. Semen Allergy
We have an entire article devoted to this allergy. Some women are allergic to sperm. Sex with a condom is the apparent solution until they want to get pregnant. I guess there’s always artificial insemination.
3. Allergic to Exercise
Come on, at one time or another most of us have claimed to be allergic to exercise. I wish I would have know about this when I was in the army, I might have tried it out on my drill sergeant; but then again, perhaps not. This one is even more rare to being allergic to water. But this one can be dangerous in that it could cause anaphylaxis, a condition in which your blood pressure drops and you have trouble breathing. There are two ways this allergy manifests itself. One is caused by eating food within a couple of hours of exercise and the other is not related to food.
4. Solar Urticaria, or allergic to sunlight
Crazy, huh? This is another super rare allergy. If you have it, you probably won’t be sporting a suntan, unless you spray it on.
5. Allergic to being touched
Nope, we’re not making this up. Some people have dermographism a form of physical urticaria. Dermographism means "skin writing," because if you have it you can write your name on your skin with pressure from your fingernail. The pressure also causes an itchy hive reaction.
6. Cold Urticaria, allergic to being cold
This allergy can kill you. If you have this allergy and are suddenly exposed to extreme cold you, wow, super bad, your blood pressure can drop to deadly levels. Don’t jump into cold water. There is no treatment, there is only prevention.
If you think you have any of these allergies, see your doctor. If you don’t believe these allergies are real, see your doctor and ask him or her.
